See the most touching photographs of the Queen and Charles over the years, from Vogue.
Whether one is a monarchist or not, this is a moment in history no one will ever forget.
Queen Elizabeth II, then Princess Elizabeth, was just 22 when she gave birth to the future King Charles III on 14 November 1948 at Buckingham Palace. As her eldest son, and therefore heir to the throne, the pair had a close relationship. In more recent years, the Prince Of Wales often joined his mother at official engagements, as well as attending events on her behalf.
On the then Prince Charles’s 70th birthday in 2018, the Queen gave a moving tribute to her son at a dinner at Buckingham Palace. “It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday,” she said. “It means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up. It is rather like – to use an analogy I am certain will find favour – planting a tree and being able to watch it grow.”
